Fullstack Developer: job profile and outlook

Full-stack developers combine front-end and back-end expertise and are therefore able to independently develop a web application from the user interface to the database. This versatility makes them particularly valuable for start-ups and medium-sized companies that prefer agile teams with broad expertise. The requirements profile of a full-stack developer is correspondingly extensive: in addition to front-end technologies such as React, Angular or Vue.js, back-end frameworks such as Express, Django, Spring Boot or Laravel are expected. Knowledge of database technologies, REST and GraphQL APIs, containerisation with Docker and basic DevOps knowledge are also required. The ability to switch between different technology levels and to see the big picture of an application is the key added value of this role. In terms of salary, full-stack developers benefit from their broad positioning. Remuneration is on a par with that of specialised developers, although the range varies depending on the focus and industry. Positions in companies that rely on modern technology stacks and encourage independent work are particularly attractive. Career development offers numerous options: From generalist developer to specialisations in frontend or backend to roles such as technical lead, solution architect or CTO. The demand for full-stack developers remains high, as companies increasingly value T-shaped engineers who can go both in breadth and depth.

  • Sources: job ads with a stated salary that are assigned to a role, plus recorded salary data sets. Currently 6,381 active IT jobs state their salary.
  • Range: lower 10 % to upper 10 % (P10–P90), so that individual outliers do not shift the limits. The median splits the values into two equal halves.
  • Plausible: only gross annual salaries between €15,000 and €250,000; placeholders and monthly values are excluded.
  • Calculator: role median × experience factor × federal state factor. The factors come from 4,290 salary data sets – each as a ratio to the median of its role, so the mix of roles does not distort them.
  • Minimum size: breakdowns by skill, city and work model only appear from 20 values; every figure states its basis.
