IT Project Manager – Job Profile & Salary Prospects

IT project managers manage the planning, implementation and completion of IT projects. They define project scope, schedules and budgets, coordinate teams and stakeholders and ensure that projects are successfully completed on time and within budget. As the link between technology and business, they make a significant contribution to the company's success. Requirements include experience in project management methods such as PRINCE2, PMI/PMBOK or agile frameworks such as Scrum and SAFe. Knowledge of project management tools such as Jira, Microsoft Project or Confluence is just as important as a solid technical understanding and strong communication skills. Certifications such as PMP, PRINCE2 Practitioner or Scrum Master emphasise the qualification. Salaries for IT project managers are above average and increase with the size and complexity of the project. IT consulting companies, financial service providers and large corporations with extensive IT transformation programmes offer particularly attractive salaries. Project responsibility and budget size also have a significant influence on remuneration, with career paths leading from junior project manager to senior project manager to programme manager, head of PMO or IT division manager. Many IT project managers also develop in the direction of product management, IT consulting or management. Increasing digitalisation ensures a constantly growing number of IT projects and therefore stable career prospects.
