Embedded Developer – Job Profile & Salary Prospects

Embedded developers programme the software that runs in electronic devices and embedded systems - from control units in vehicles and medical devices to IoT sensors and industrial controllers. They work at the interface between hardware and software and must have both programming expertise and an understanding of electrical engineering. Core skills include programming in C and C++, knowledge of real-time operating systems such as FreeRTOS, experience with microcontrollers from various manufacturers and an understanding of hardware interfaces such as SPI, I2C and UART. Debugging tools, oscilloscopes and logic analysers are also part of the working toolkit. A degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering or mechatronics forms the classic basis. Salaries for embedded developers are above average, especially in the automotive industry, medical technology and industrial automation. The combination of hardware proximity and software expertise makes these specialists particularly valuable. The regional focus is on the strong industrial regions of southern Germany, with career opportunities ranging from junior embedded developer to senior specialist to system architect or team leader. Specialisations in AUTOSAR, functional safety or IoT platforms open up additional prospects. The increasing networking of devices and electromobility are ensuring that demand remains high.
