Computer scientist: job profile and outlook

Computer scientists are one of the most versatile and sought-after professions in the IT sector. Computer scientists develop software solutions, design databases, analyse complex systems and work at the interface between technology and business processes. Whether in software development, system administration or IT consulting - the areas of application are wide-ranging and range from traditional companies to innovative start-ups. A sound education forms the basis for a successful career as a computer scientist. Typical qualifications include a degree in computer science, business informatics or related disciplines. Alternatively, training as an IT specialist also offers a solid start. In addition to technical expertise in programming languages, databases and network technologies, analytical thinking and the ability to solve complex problems in a structured manner are also required. The salary prospects for computer scientists are above average. Even career starters can expect attractive starting salaries, which rise significantly with increasing experience and specialisation. Particularly high salaries are offered in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing and IT security. The region also plays a role: salaries tend to be higher in urban centres such as Munich, Frankfurt or Hamburg than in rural areas. The career paths are varied and range from junior developer to senior specialist to management positions such as IT manager or CTO. Computer scientists can constantly improve their market position and benefit from the continuing high demand for IT specialists through continuous further training and certifications.

How we calculate

  • Sources: job ads with a stated salary that are assigned to a role, plus recorded salary data sets. Currently 6,381 active IT jobs state their salary.
  • Range: lower 10 % to upper 10 % (P10–P90), so that individual outliers do not shift the limits. The median splits the values into two equal halves.
  • Plausible: only gross annual salaries between €15,000 and €250,000; placeholders and monthly values are excluded.
  • Calculator: role median × experience factor × federal state factor. The factors come from 4,290 salary data sets – each as a ratio to the median of its role, so the mix of roles does not distort them.
  • Minimum size: breakdowns by skill, city and work model only appear from 20 values; every figure states its basis.
