Site Reliability Engineer – Job Profile & Salary Prospects

Site Reliability Engineers ensure the reliability, availability and performance of large software systems. The SRE concept was coined by Google and combines software engineering with operations in order to operate highly scalable systems efficiently. SREs define service level objectives, implement monitoring and automate manual operations processes. Technical requirements include strong programming skills in Go, Python or Java, experience with observability stacks such as Prometheus, Grafana and ELK, container orchestration with Kubernetes and incident management processes. A deep understanding of distributed systems, capacity planning and chaos engineering characterises experienced SREs. The ability to systematically solve problems under pressure is a key skill and salaries for SREs are among the highest in the IT industry. The responsibility for business-critical systems, the demanding combination of development and operations and the high demand ensure above-average remuneration. Technology groups, cloud providers and large e-commerce platforms offer the most attractive packages, with career paths leading from Junior SRE to Senior SRE to Staff SRE, SRE Manager or Director of Reliability Engineering. Changes to roles such as Platform Engineering, Cloud Architecture or VP of Infrastructure are also common. The increasing dependence on highly available digital services ensures excellent long-term career prospects for SREs.
