Big Data Engineer – Job Profile & Salary Prospects

Big data engineers design and operate systems for processing massive amounts of data that push traditional database solutions to their limits. They work with distributed systems and technologies that make it possible to process petabytes of data in real time or in batches and make it available for analyses. The technical requirements for big data engineers are demanding: experience with the Hadoop ecosystem, Apache Spark, Apache Kafka and Flink is part of the standard repertoire. Knowledge of cloud-based big data services such as AWS EMR, Google BigQuery or Azure HDInsight is also required. Programming in Python, Scala or Java, experience with NoSQL databases and a deep understanding of distributed systems are further important qualifications. Salaries for Big Data Engineers are above average and reflect the complexity of the tasks and the shortage of skilled labour. Particularly attractive salaries are offered by technology groups, telecommunications companies and financial service providers who work with enormous volumes of data on a daily basis. Career paths lead from Junior Big Data Engineer to Senior Engineer to Data Platform Architect or Head of Data Engineering. Specialisations in real-time streaming, data lake architecture or data mesh open up further career opportunities. The constantly growing demand for data processing in IoT, streaming and AI training guarantees excellent prospects for the future.
