IT Consultant – Job Profile & Salary Prospects

IT consultants advise companies on the planning and implementation of IT strategies, digitalisation projects and technology transformations. They analyse existing IT landscapes, identify optimisation potential and develop customised solution concepts. As external experts, they contribute cross-industry expertise and best practices to customer projects. The requirements for IT consultants are diverse: in addition to sound technical knowledge, they are expected to have strong analytical skills, presentation skills and the ability to communicate complex issues in an understandable way. Industry expertise, project management experience and certifications in relevant technologies or frameworks such as TOGAF, ITIL or cloud platforms significantly increase the market value. Salaries for IT consultants are above average and increase significantly with experience, specialisation and seniority. Large consulting firms such as McKinsey Digital, Accenture and Capgemini offer structured career paths with attractive remuneration packages. Specialised IT consultancies and freelance consultancy work also offer high income opportunities, with career paths leading from Junior Consultant to Senior Consultant and Manager to Partner or Director. After a few years, many IT consultants move into industry positions as CTO, Head of IT or Digital Transformation Lead. The consulting experience provides an excellent basis for a variety of career paths in the entire IT sector.
