Scrum Master – Job Profile & Salary Prospects

Scrum Masters are the guardians of the agile process and support development teams in working efficiently and self-organised according to the principles of the Scrum framework. They moderate Scrum events, remove obstacles and promote a culture of continuous improvement. In doing so, they act as servant leaders who enable the team to realise its full potential. The qualifications of a Scrum Master go beyond pure methodological knowledge. In addition to sound knowledge of the Scrum framework and agile principles, coaching skills, moderation expertise and a good feel for team dynamics are expected. A basic technical understanding is helpful in order to understand the challenges of the development team. Certifications such as PSM, CSM or SAFe Scrum Master are common in the industry. Salaries for Scrum Masters are attractive and vary depending on company size and industry. Scrum Masters are particularly well paid in large technology companies, financial service providers and in the automotive industry, where agile transformation is actively promoted. Experienced Scrum Masters who supervise several teams earn above-average salaries, and career opportunities range from Scrum Master to Senior Scrum Master to Agile Coach, Release Train Engineer or Head of Agile. Switching to roles such as Product Owner, IT Project Manager or Organisational Developer is also common. The ongoing agile transformation in companies in all sectors ensures good future prospects for Scrum Masters.
