Security Analyst – Job Profile & Salary Prospects

Security analysts continuously monitor IT systems for security threats, analyse security incidents and implement protective measures to defend against cyber attacks. They often work in security operations centres and are the first line of defence against intruders, malware and other digital threats. Core skills include experience with SIEM systems such as Splunk, QRadar or Microsoft Sentinel, knowledge of network protocols, log analysis and malware analysis. An understanding of threat intelligence, incident response playbooks and forensics fundamentals is also expected. Analytical thinking and the ability to correctly assess threats under time pressure are crucial soft skills. Salaries for security analysts are attractive and offer a good entry into IT security. With increasing experience and specialisation, salaries rise significantly. Analysts with experience in threat hunting, digital forensics or cloud security monitoring are particularly well paid. Companies in all sectors, especially financial service providers and critical infrastructures, are actively looking for qualified analysts. Career paths lead from Junior Security Analyst to Senior Analyst to SOC Manager, Threat Intelligence Lead or Security Engineer. The transition to penetration testing or security architecture is also a common career move. The massive shortage of skilled labour in cybersecurity ensures excellent long-term career prospects for security analysts.
